1. What does the practicum at Grondin, Poudrier, Bernier involve?

Our articling students work in close collaboration with the firm’s counsels. They are responsible for performing various types of legal research and helping the counsels manage their files. They make daily representations before the Practice Court of the Superior Court and the Court of Quebec, and they draft procedures and prepare cases. Articling students interested in making oral submissions have the opportunity to attend interrogations and hear various petitions and cases.

2. How does the practicum work at Grondin, Poudrier, Bernier?

Our firm has no formal rotation system: we encourage our articling students to work in all fields of law to be able to make sound decisions regarding their areas of specialization. Articling students are closely monitored by their articling mentors and are required to work for all the firm’s counsels who practice in various fields.

3. What tools do you provide for your articling students?

Our articling students have access to a central information system network. They use the system to perform the research that has been assigned to them. It gives them access to various private and public databases as well as our internal database, which contains several decades of data. They can also collaborate with two legal technicians who can orient them in their various searches. They also have access to a very comprehensive library dedicated to the various areas of practice within our firm.

4. Does your firm offer summer employment?

We occasionally hire students to work on specific projects; however, we do not usually hire students.

5. Are there articling positions open for 2006 and 2007?

Our firm is a signatory to the agreement concluded between several Québec City and Montréal firms regarding the hiring of articling students. As such, we recruit our students in their second year of university. As a result, all the articling positions for 2006 and 2007 have already been filled. However, since our requirements are subject to change, we invite candidates interested in completing a practicum in 2006 or 2007 to send us their resumes.

6. How many articling students are employed at your firm?

Every year, we select a minimum of four candidates for our Quebec City offices, two of whom start their practicums in February with the other two beginning in August. Some candidates may also be interested in completing a practicum in our Montreal offices, in which case they will be referred to the persons in charge of selecting articling students at our Montreal offices.

7. When do you begin recruiting your articling students?

Since our firm is a signatory to the agreement concluded between several Québec City and Montréal firms regarding the hiring of articling students, the annual selection process generally begins in February. Requests for 2008 articling positions must be sent to us no later than February 10, 2006. Candidates are invited to submit their resumes, accompanied by a letter of presentation and a copy of their transcripts.

8. How many interviews do you conduct?

Every year, we meet approximately fifty candidates some of whom are invited to a second interview.

9. How does the interview process work?

Our selection process involves two interviews. After the second interview we begin the final selection process. We then invite all the candidates who participated in the second interview to meet our team of counsels and legal technicians at a cocktail held at our Québec City offices. This meeting is not part of the selection process; it gives the candidates the opportunity to become better acquainted with the members of the firm so they can make informed decisions when they are offered practicums.

10. Are there any hiring opportunities at your firm?

Articling students employed with our firm are, without a doubt, our primary source of young recruits. Over the last two years, a significant number of our articling students joined our staff after having completed their practicums with us.

11. How are the articling students remunerated?

We offer competitive salaries that compare favourably with those of other major law firms in the Québec City area, and we provide paid indoor parking.
